Chandrama:
Chandrama is traditional ornament
used as hair pin worn worn by Nepali women. It is an important head jewelry
among the Gurung, Kirati and some other ethnic groups . Shape of Chandrama is
like crescent moon.Sometimes the moon cradles the sun or star. The pin may be
worn anywhere on the head with the points of the crescent either up or down.
Different
designs of flora and fauna are incorporated iside this crescent shape.
The concept of wearing Chandrama may be derived from crescent moon on the head
of lord Shiva. The Moon is first the
light of the night in the sky. It illuminates the earth on full moon nights and
plunges it into the mystery of darkness until the new moon. This phenomenon of
constant emergence, growth and disappearance of the moon symbolizes life, death
and rebirth. Moon also symbolizes peace, calm and beauty. Therefore Chandrama
has both religious and cultural significance. In recent days Chandrama of
different shapes such as star, clip , butterfly etc. can be observed in Nepal.
