Coin necklaces are still can bee seen worn by many groups of Nepal. They are called rupiya mala. Indian or Chinese silver coins mostly were used in them since at least the late 19th century. Such necklaces serve both as indicators of wealth and as charms to attract money. Occasionally, money from Persia and more far-flung regions would make its way to Nepal through trade routes. Tamangs know it as Tanga Mala. Newar s know it as Asarfi maala
